Our pumps can automatically turn on and off  in negative head situations. If you are in doubt as to your situation being positive or negative head then send us a sketch of what you are trying to do (a typical sketch is shown at the end of this blog). If your shower or tap is only just positive head or only just negative head or it is effectively zero head then you will need a manual solution.

Any automatic pump can be wired up to run in manual mode so you might want to try an automatic solution first.

SPB Automatic Pumping Solution (Gravity Hot & Cold)

Remove the non return valves from the hot side of the mixer shower and fit a SP22S with a SP1U to single boost the cold and double boost the hot (Total cost £255 ).

SPB Automatic Pumping Solution (Gravity Hot & Mains Cold)

Remove the non return valves from the hot side of the mixer shower and fit a SP21S to double boost the hot (Total cost £155).

Manual Pumping Solution

Fit a SP21S with a SP1U to single boost the cold and double boost the hot (Total cost £205).

Remove the non return valves from the hot side of the mixer shower and fit a SP22S with a SP1U to single boost the cold and double boost the hot (Total cost £255 )

Why?

Gravity Hot & Cold

I always like to explain why I recommend a solution. The reason for the automatic solution works is that for a gravity hot and cold system there is no need for non return valves as both the hot and cold are at the same pressure when the system is at rest. Removing the check valves allows reverse flow in the hot and cold pipes.

You need to run the pumps manually when you first fit the pumps but afterwards  when you have a shower you and you turn off the shower valve at the end of your shower, water is trapped in the pipe/hose between the valve and the shower head. When you next use the shower this water flows back to the water cylinder and cold water tank. An automatic pump will wait 2 seconds after you open the valve for your next shower and then it will detect this flow and the pumps start.

If you do not close the mixer valve properly after your shower the water will dribble back to the cylinder at a rate too slow to start the pumps and you will have to prime the pumps again. Please note that the SPB flow switch is designed to ignore flow for 15 seconds after the pump switches off so if you try to operate a tap or shower mixer within 15 seconds of it turning off it will not detect the back flow and turn on.

The reason I suggest you double boost the hot is that unlike in a positive head situation where the gravity head adds one metre head with negative head situations you deduct one metre head. This is compensated by adding a second pump and achieving a double boost.

Gravity hot and mains pressure cold

The reason for the automatic solution works is that for a gravity hot and mains cold system there is no need for non return valves when the shower valve is fully closed. When you open the valve the hot and cold are at the different pressure and in removing the check valves it allows reverse flow in the hot  pipe. An automatic pump waits 2 seconds after you open the valve for your next shower and then it will detect this flow and the pumps start.
