Traditional shower pumps have a very significant suction draw but this does not apply to a ShowerPowerBooster. A showerpowerbooster is designed not to suck in air so that is why it will not suck in air. A ShowerPowerBooster will not cavitate.

All pumps have a suction side which could pull in water and air. Traditional power shower pumps have a very significant pulling power. A ShowerPowerBooster has a poor suction and a high delivery pressure. A ShowerPowerBooster will pull in air if there is no water to pump but provided there is water in the vent pipe or the cold water tank the SPB will not pull in air. A ShowerPowerBooster can be on a supply off a vent pipe or fitted directly below a cold water tank in the loft and it will not pull in air.

If you restrict the water to a traditional power shower it will potentially cause negative pressure and ‘cavitation’ around the pump blades. The indication that you have cavitation is a gravelly noise as unstable micro bubbles which had formed around the rotor blades collapse and cause localised but very damaging shock waves. These will damage a traditional pump and in a few hours you may need to replace it.

To prevent cavitation and air being drawn in a traditional pump will need an Essex flange (or similar), and it should not be fitted in the loft or under a bath. Shower Power Boosters can be fitted anywhere.
